A Place Apart

At the beginning of this month, September, I holidayed in Greece.

I revisited places I already thought I knew well, yet this time was able to see them in a different light.

I stayed in two towers.

The first, the Tower Suite at the Villa Andreas, Rhodes Old Town, afforded me a a sea-captain’s eye view of that UNESCO World Heritage site.

The second, the Jasmine Room at the Emporio Hotel, Nimborios, Symi, gave me clarity.

After only two nights there, I left feeling completely refreshed.

I would have liked to stay longer, greedy with bliss.

I would have liked to keep this to myself, selfish with luxury.

But if I never left, I couldn’t go back.

And if I never shared, there’d be no joy.

Front Row Seat

20:05 03-09-2017

Tholos restaurant, Symi, Greece.

Waiting for good friends to join me for dinner.

A glass of wine and the evening traffic keep me entertained.

I’ve written about this restaurant before.

Here and there, and elsewhere, my favourite, anywhere.

A Seasonal Visitor

Late summer sees the watermelon vendor set up his stall a short walk out of the Amboise Gate, Rhodes Old Town, Greece. He, and his watermelons, come from the village of Apolakkia, about 80 kilometers to the south.

The Bastion

It’s no secret that, for some years, Akakies has been The Pink for me – still or sparkling, my favourite Greek rose wine. But this year, at the urging of the same people who got me hooked on that Kyr-Yiannis staple, I tried La Tour Melas Idylle. Produced in Achinos, between Athens and Thessaloniki, on Kyros Melas’ estate, it’s paler, more elegant and more grown-up than Akakies. It is Bordeaux in style, with a Proven├žal air about it. On a Greek vacation spent in two towers and the shadows of a bastion, it seemed even more fitting to try this wine and picture it here – on a September evening as dusk fell.

Scorched Earth

On 1 September, a fire started (likely by a carelessly discarded cigarette) on Monte Smith, above Rhodes town, Greece. It took hold quickly in the dry heat of late summer and, fanned by the wind, cut a swathe through the vegetation in the area. I took this photograph nine days later, the air still thick with the smell of ash.

Light Relief

For a final Saturday-swim that day, the salty-feisty sea-dog and her fine-warm human took me to the Light House beach at Kiotari. Earlier, we’d ventured into the blue and then relaxed cheek to cheek. The freddo cappuccino, the laid-back soundtrack, the soothing shade and the cooling sea provided the ultimate chill on a hot afternoon.
